MCMC blocks Pirate Bay and top file-sharing sites
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received a request from the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to prevent access to 10 top file-sharing websites that it found to have contravened the Copyright Act 1987.
Iazlann a statement today, the commission said it has informed the relevant licensees under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 about this request and action was currently being undertaken in phases.
The MCMC said this to clarify the issue of the blocking of websites.
It said under the Act, the licensees were obliged to assist MCMC in preventing the commission or attempted commission of an offence.
“Accordingly, compliance to the law is not to be construed as censorship,” it said.
The MCMC said further details regarding the enforcement of the Copyright Act 1987 may be obtained from the ministry.

On May 30, the commission sent a letter to all internet service providers (ISPs) to block 10 file-sharing websites.
"In exercising your duties under section 263 (1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and in preventing the commission or attempted commission of an offence under any written law of Malaysia ... the commission hereby requests you to undertake the actions under section 263 (2) with respect to the following URL/Web addresses," it said, listing the top file-sharing websites.
"Failure to comply with the above requirements is an offence under section 242 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998."
